BOOST FOR TENNIS IN SAMFORD Getting children active in sport is good for their own health and it helps build a stronger community. Tennis is a great game to introduce children to activity and competitive sport. A re-elected Turnbull Coalition Government will support expansion of the Samford Tennis Club facilities by providing $100,000 in funding. The Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton said the money would enable the club to build an additional court at its Samford Parklands facility. Mr Dutton said the club was a vibrant community group in the Samford Valley with more than 500 members and was continuing to grow. Tennis has a rich history in the Samford Valley growing from groups of friends playing social matches on private courts to formation of a club and competition on courts in Samford Village and then development of courts at the parklands precinct. Initially the club hoped to provide a 10 court complex, but only four were built with provision for another four in the future. “I am extremely pleased that the next Turnbull Government will provide the funding for that expansion to begin,” Mr Dutton said. “The Samford Tennis Club oversees local players’ involvement in the Tennis Brisbane Superleague and is growing the sport in the Samford Valley, particularly and importantly in bringing junior players through. “It’s a huge compliment to this club that six of its top players have won scholarships with colleges in America,” he said. Providing additional courts at Samford would enable the club to hold state and national tournaments and possibly attract international players to utilise the courts for training during the Brisbane International.
